Defending the Rainforest’s Gentle Giants

The Orangutan Future Trust (OFT) is devoted to protecting orangutans and the lush rainforests they call home. Through hands-on conservation projects, education programs, and community partnerships, we are creating real, lasting change across Borneo and Sumatra. Every sapling we plant, every rescue we complete, and every student we teach brings us closer to a thriving rainforest ecosystem where orangutans can live free and safe.

Habitat Restoration

Deforestation has destroyed millions of acres of orangutan habitat, leaving these intelligent primates with nowhere to go. OFT’s reforestation teams have restored over 3,500 acres of degraded land since 2019, planting native species like meranti, fig, and durian trees — plants that provide both food and shelter for orangutans. Working with local farmers and volunteers, we’ve established six long-term restoration sites in central Kalimantan, ensuring that new forests take root and stay protected for generations to come.

Wildlife Rescue & Rehabilitation

Illegal pet trading and habitat destruction often leave orangutans orphaned or injured. Our dedicated rescue partners respond to distress calls from across the region, bringing orangutans to the OFT Rehabilitation Center near Palangka Raya.
Since opening the center in 2020, we’ve successfully rescued 85 orangutans, and released 42 back into the wild after full rehabilitation. Each orangutan receives medical care, nutrition, and behavioral training to prepare them for survival in protected forest zones.

Education & Awareness

Education is the key to long-term conservation. OFT’s “Wild Classroom” program brings rainforest science into schools across Indonesia and beyond. Since 2021, we’ve reached more than 18,000 students through interactive lessons, school visits, and online events. In 2024, we launched our global #HandsForOrangutans campaign, encouraging people around the world to make small changes — like reducing palm oil use and supporting sustainable products — to protect rainforest habitats.
